Brown Hooded Kingfisher

I painted this delightful little bird for my annual exhibition at the Grahamstown Arts Festival. Birds represent my second love as a subject to paint after aviation and I have painted many examples over the years, especially the raptors I have seen on my visits to the Kruger National Park. I find that acrylics are an ideal medium to use for the detail needed to paint the layered textures of the feathers.

As would be expected, Darryl’s love for aircraft started at a young age and his passion for art, even earlier. Drawing and painting, have always been Darryl’s way of expressing his love or appreciation for a subject. Most men have a fascination or a love for machines and for him it was destined to be the aeroplane. Darryl saw a Spitfire fly for the first time at the age of 7 and was in awe of the beauty of its graceful lines and the roar of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine as it performed its display...the love affair had begun! Darryl was privileged to grow up with an older brother who was an aero-modelling enthusiast, a Grandfather who was a pilot and a Father who is also a professional artist. All things considered, it’s not surprising that he combined the world of art and aviation and pursued it as a career.
